Carbon, Biodiversity & Water: Commodities of Equality

Environmental Markets provide value to natural resources and can be used as tools to mitigate climate change, manage biodiversity and protect water sources. They can also provide us with tools to bring millions of people out of poverty. These markets have the potential to allow anyone who owns land that provides environmental services to be paid for those services. But, in order for Environmental Markets to truly be tools for development they must be transparent and open to all. These markets must be accessible to everyone in the world and allow all people to benefit from the environmental services they provide. We will only truly solve our environmental problems if carbon, biodiversity & water become commodities of equality.

Brazilian Tribe Solidifies Claim on Carbon

Indigenous people around the world hope to earn carbon credits by preserving rainforests and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). For that to happen, however, they have to prove they own the rights to carbon credits from trees they save and manage. Brazil’s SuruĂ­ tribe appears to have just done that – and laid the groundwork for others to follow.
